John Muraco, ATR, RYT – Philosophy and Experience
Sometimes there are no words to express what a serious life crisis can feel like. The tendency to disconnect from those around you and to lose sight of personal goals is normal, and the ability to express yourself clearly may be diminished. I have often observed, however, that people have their own unique inner resources that can help them heal and re-embrace their lives. Since 2000 I have studied a variety of approaches of creative expression and wellness, for the achievement of self-expression, stress reduction, and the regaining of personal power. These practices have included the visual and performing arts, and holistic lifestyle coaching to promote physical and emotional health. I studied art therapy at the School of Visual Arts where I gained valuable experience using art in hospitals, with amputees, male and female veterans, and people living with cancer, dementia, and other challenging diagnoses. It was clear that art therapy provided a critical space for relaxing, and an expressive outlet for physical pain and deep emotions that were nearly impossible to put into words. More recently I’ve worked with adolescents wrestling with traumatic circumstances; again, the power of creative expression, movement, and free choice have proven to be instrumental in moving forward.
Currently I am focused on bringing the benefits of expressive therapy and relaxation methods to veterans and uniformed service professionals. I have recently created a new affiliation with, and am practicing out of The Resiliency Center in Flourtown, Pennsylvania.
